I’m glad you could join us for the non-April-Fool’s edition of Autoline Daily. If you missed the other show with Jim Hall , you can check it out on our website, AutolineDaily.com. Anyway, here is today’s real top news.

To paraphrase the famous line from the movie Field of Dreams: Build it and we will buy. At least that’s what the White House is telling General Motors when it announced yesterday that the U.S. Government – the automaker’s largest investor – will purchase the first 100 Chevrolet Volts that come off the line later this year . The Detroit Free Press also reports that during that same announcement President Obama said the government would be doubling its hybrid purchase – now buying 5,000 units to be driven by government workers. No details on which hybrids would be parked in federal garages yet but we can probably count on seeing some GM vehicles in the mix.

Well, talk about a turnaround. Just when you thought the champ was on the ropes, he comes back swinging, and hard! Of course we’re talking about global sales champ Toyota. The Detroit News tells us that, thanks to those generous incentives, Toyota’s March sales jumped an unexpected 40 percent from weak, year-earlier levels. And it doesn’t look like those incentives are going away anytime soon. Toyota says they’re going to stay around at least another month. That’s starting to worry the competition like GM and Ford that they might also have to start driving down the same road…a road they’ve been trying to avoid.
